Corrections and revision history

This is a provisional edition and remains open to correction. Corrections are welcomed, especially where a reader can identify a Danish source passage, an omitted phrase, an error of meaning, an unclear English sentence, a broken link or an accessibility problem.

What to include

  • The discourse title and passage number.
  • The wording that may need correction.
  • The reason for the proposed correction and, where possible, a source or scholarly reference.

Email editor@worksoflovesk.org with the discourse, passage number, current wording, suggested correction and reason or source. You can also use “Suggest a correction” at the end of each discourse. No form or account is required.

Revision record

12 October 2026 — Second Series IX: first canonical web publication

Published the complete provisional readable text of The Work of Love in Remembering Someone Who Has Died, with 93 editorial passage references and a complete Danish–English comparison. The reviewed source-unit wording and order were preserved. Added a “Before you read” introduction, translation notes, citation guidance, correction links and a six-movement reading guide.

The canonical full-discourse integrity and readability review records PASS. The saved web texts were exactly read back and checked against the reviewed source and readable layers. This is AI-assisted review, not independent human scholarly review.

Source: official SKS volume 9, pp. 339–352, and commentary; first-edition printed pp. 157–172. Printed pp. 162–163 were not checked in facsimile under the authorised exception; the official transcript and commentary supply authority there.

Patrick authorised publication on the same provisional basis as previous discourses on 12 October 2026. This supersedes the earlier pre-publication hold for a hard-copy Hong comparison and human editorial review; those remain later review steps. The text is open to correction and is not a definitive or independently peer-reviewed translation.

Publication concerns the web text and guide; no new PDF, EPUB or Amazon edition is represented as available. Translation work on the separate concluding section continues.

9 October 2026 — Second Series VIII: canonical readable replacement

The public English reading text of Second Series VIII — The Victory of a Reconciling Spirit in Love has been synchronised to the canonical Danish-first stream B24082–B24268 / Stages23432–23618. All 187 successive source units and readable translations were assigned to the 22 existing public passages in source order; all 22 passage numbers and permanent links are retained. A fresh comparison confirmed the Danish by-passage text matched the canonical Danish after accounting for typographical emphasis, so the existing Danish comparison and its formatting were preserved. The epigraph and first-edition source description have also been reconciled.

The separately guarded complete Discourse VIII integrity/readability review was committed PASS on 6 October 2026, followed by a distinct committed canonical discourse-completion record. The review covered the official SKS text and commentary, pp. 327–338, and the 1847 first-edition printed pp. 143–156 with the p.157 discourse boundary. No facsimile exception was needed for this discourse. These were substantive AI-assisted audits and not independent human specialist review or editorial approval. The reading text remains provisional, corrigible and open to further scrutiny; no later English translation was used as the drafting authority.

The superseded provisional web translation and its earlier Second Series VIII PDF (historical continuous Series Two pp. 179–196) are no longer the current reading edition. The older PDF is retained here solely as historical evidence; no replacement PDF is claimed in this revision. No canonical translation or rolling-ledger content was changed by the website publication.

5 October 2026 — Second Series VII: canonical readable replacement

The public English reading text and Danish comparison of Second Series VII — Mercy, a Work of Love have been synchronised to the canonical Danish-first stream, B23861–B24081 / Stages23211–23431. The canonical control record contains a separately guarded full Discourse VII integrity and readability review with result PASS, followed by a committed completion record marking the discourse fully translated and audited and verifying the exact boundary before Discourse VIII.

The replacement preserves all 25 established public passage numbers and permanent anchors while regrouping the canonical sentence-sized units into those stable passages. The Danish comparison is likewise synchronised to the canonical source units, correcting earlier provisional transcription differences without changing the public anchors. The canonical epigraph punctuation and publication-status wording are also restored. The translation remains provisional, corrigible and AI-assisted; no independent bilingual adjudication is claimed, and no later English translation was used as drafting authority.

The previous provisional web wording is superseded. Its standalone PDF is no longer presented as the current edition but remains available here for historical reference: previous provisional Second Series VII PDF (continuous Series Two pp. 152–178). Discourse VIII remains a separate provisional publication pending completion of its present canonical workflow.

16 September 2026 — First Series: complete editorial revision 1.0

Reviewed all eight discourses in full: 218 numbered passages, together with the four Preface and Prayer units. The review corrected meaning, agency, negation, scope, omissions and malformed English while retaining repetition and conceptual difficulty. Main English and Danish-comparison English are synchronized. The public close layers in II.C and V were reviewed separately in all 66 passages; 23 close passages received corrections.

Significant repairs include the omitted Pharisee’s answer in II.A.6; II.B’s account of leaving out the signs of offence; II.C’s feast and equality arguments; three reversed agents in III.A.30; the condition in III.B.7; Peter’s repeated assurance in IV.2; and forgiving rather than granting imperfections in IV.22. The Prayer restores “from what is your own”. The missing unnumbered epigraphs, 1 Timothy 1:5 in III.B and 1 John 4:20 in IV, are restored in English and Danish. Existing numbered Danish passages and public anchors are unchanged.

All 218 numbered discourse passages and four Preface/Prayer units received a complete English reading, comparison with the Danish source, targeted official commentary and first-edition checks, and a final connected English reading. All 66 public close-translation passages in II.C and V were compared with Danish; revised close paragraphs were reread in context. No independent bilingual adjudication or statistical assurance is claimed. No later English translation was consulted during this review. Earlier files retain their own historical provenance.

Frozen historical masters and web snapshots are preserved in the source repository. The dated additive corrections generate a new current reader and master. The Second Series checkpoint and completed batch record are unchanged. Readable and close translation layers remain explicitly distinct.

All eight individual PDFs, the complete First Series PDF and the EPUB have been rebuilt from the current readable master. These PDFs have new pagination; discourse and passage references remain stable.

16 September 2026 — Second Series I and III–VI: complete readable revisions 2.0

Revised all 127 numbered passages of these five discourses against the Danish. The six major meaning findings from the preceding audit, malformed sentences and other recorded editorial findings have been addressed in complete paragraphs, followed by continuous English reading and checks of source relationships. The revisions retain rhetorical repetition, theological claims and conceptual difficulties.

Particular corrections distinguish bearing from enduring in I; restore the question in III.20 and ethical shame in III.23–26; clarify dependence on a helper in IV.18; preserve the comparison of loudness and reach in V.21; and repair missing negatives and subjects in VI. The explicit query at VI.10 is resolved here as “But the fact that something is missing does not yet mean there is a break.” The note explains this contextual reading; it remains open to specialist correction.

The Danish comparison corrects Overveielsens to Overveielses in I.3, ligesom to ligeledes in I.7, and the III epigraph to Kjærlighed haaber Alt. Punctuation is also aligned with the preserved source text: the comma in I.3, the omitted dash in VI.11, and dash forms in VI.16 and VI.22. All existing passage numbers and anchors are preserved.

The source repository now contains versioned editorial corrections and a rebuilt current reader. The frozen legacy record, completed translation batches and progress checkpoint are preserved. Earlier differences between the web and master are recorded rather than silently overwritten. This revision concerns readable English; the separate historical close-English layer remains explicitly unrevised.

All numbered passages were revised against the Danish SKS text and read continuously in English. The revision reviews agents, negation, scope, argumentative turns, recurring terms and joins between the original small batches. Selected official SKS commentary and historical dictionary entries were consulted. The first-edition spot checks for this revision cover the crucial readings in III.23–26, IV.18, V.21 and VI.10; a new complete first-edition collation is not claimed. Drafting and review took place in the same AI-assisted session, without independent bilingual adjudication. No later English translation was used as a drafting comparator. This statement records this revision’s work, not earlier process claims.

Each discourse’s main English, comparison English, notes and new PDF have been synchronized. VI’s first PDF is now available. The five reading maps and their stable passage links were rechecked against the revised readings. These are editorial revisions, not a new statistical quality certification.

Each new PDF starts at page 1. Use discourse and passage numbers for references shared across formats.

15 September 2026 — Second Series II: complete readable revision 2.0

Revised all twenty-four passages of Love Believes All Things—and Yet Is Never Deceived against the Danish SKS text. This substantive revision replaces the earlier English syntax throughout, repairs grammatical faults and clarifies pronouns, conditionals and the distinction between knowledge and believing. Passage 17 now correctly places the claim about danger in the infinite sense; passages 4 and 8 clarify magnification and the decision’s personal character and resolve.

The revision retains the discourse’s argument, direct address, theological language, significant repetitions and historical images. New editorial notes explain translation choices and difficult historical or interpretive points. The readable web text, paired English and new 21-page PDF agree. The Danish text, all twenty-four passage numbers and existing passage links are preserved. The translation master and source mapping are archived with the previous English wording.

Coverage and sense were reviewed passage by passage, followed by an English, terminology and rhetoric pass in the same AI-assisted session, using the Danish, selected K9 commentary and ODS. This statement records the work performed for this revision; it does not authenticate earlier process claims. The edition remains provisional and open to specialist correction.

The eight-movement reading map has been rechecked against the revised wording and Danish. Its terminology and historical context have been refined, and its present-day application is more explicitly tentative.

Current Second Series II PDF (21 pages; revision 2.0). The earlier 15 September PDF (17 pages) remains available for existing references, alongside the earlier August file below. The new PDF has its own page numbering; cite the discourse and passage number for stable references.

15 September 2026 — Reading maps and restored First Series V

Published eight First Series reading maps and six Second Series reading maps. Each combines a visual overview with an expandable text outline, questions and links to English passages and the Danish source. These are provisional AI-assisted interpretations, open to correction and alternative readings.

The map source check revealed that First Series V stopped before its Danish source ended. Fifteen omitted paragraphs are now translated as passages 30–44, in both close and readable English, alongside their Danish text. The unnumbered Romans 13:8 epigraph is also restored. Existing passages 1–29 and their English wording remain unchanged. The discourse now reaches its actual source ending.

The restored material was drafted from Danish, with the attached SKS K9 commentary consulted, then reviewed for coverage and sense and for terminology, rhetoric and English usage in the same AI-assisted session. The source ledger, translation masters and editorial apparatus have been updated. No independent translator or specialist validation is claimed. Source and review notes accompany the text.

The revised V PDF, complete First Series PDF and First Series EPUB include the restoration. The PDFs retain earlier discourse pages 6–255; V now occupies pages 256–291. Older download URLs remain available for existing citations. The maps now link directly to the restored English ending.

In Second Series VI, passage 20, “it never falls away” has been corrected to “it never grows decrepit” in both English web presentations, preserving the distinction between Danish affældig and affalde. This is recorded separately from the maps’ interpretation.

The published Translation Method Charter, version 1.1, omits proposed stages that were not demonstrably followed, including statistical comparison with Hong. Offline downloads now sit in an initially closed “Read offline — PDF and EPUB” section, with pagination and revision information under “About these editions”.

15 September 2026 — Passage-numbering clarification

Added a reader note and a dated charter addendum explaining why numbered passages vary in length and in their relation to Danish source paragraphs. Refined the spacing and emphasis of short theme statements and transitions. Existing passage numbers, links and translation wording are preserved. The source correspondence has been recorded separately for editorial use; this presentation update is not a new translation or a claim of additional specialist review.

15 September 2026 — First Series II.C close translation completed

Published version 1.0 of the complete provisional close translation, covering all twenty-two Danish source paragraphs. It appears as a separate Danish–close English comparison with permanent passage links, source-variant notes and a review statement. The existing readable translation and its Danish pairing are unchanged by this addition.

Two checks were performed within the same AI-assisted session: coverage and sense, then terminology, idioms and English usage. The pre-publication changes and process limitations are described with the close layer. No independent Danish specialist review is claimed.

15 September 2026 — Comparison, reading and reference repairs

  • Restored First Series III.A’s comparison from passage 20 through passage 37 and repaired its broken table markup.
  • Added all twenty-two Danish source paragraphs alongside the existing readable English in First Series II.C. The separate complete close layer was subsequently added on the same date, as recorded above.
  • Paired Danish and English on Second Series IV–VI, retaining the existing Danish passage links.
  • Added stable passage links and onward navigation to First Series V, preserving legacy anchors.
  • Corrected “means means” and the malformed phrase “swept into to abandon” in Second Series II, passage 17; restored the missing comma between “expectation” and “expectation of the manifold” in Second Series III, passage 26; corrected “who will who may”, “there will be be” and two sentence-initial capitals in III, passage 28; and corrected “that that” in Second Series IV, passage 12. These repairs appear in the reading text, comparison and revised PDFs. The grammatical and punctuation repairs were checked against the corresponding Danish sentences.
  • Published the preserved Translation Method Charter with its original dated revision notes and explicit publication provenance.
  • Introduced compact reading settings, direct reading/comparison links and consistent discourse resources. Updated download labels, the reading index and contact information.

Earlier PDF versions

August–September 2026 — Second Series releases

Discourses I–VI of the Second Series are available. VI — Love Abides was published on 15 September 2026 with all twenty-five English and Danish source passages; its PDF was not available at that release. The first PDF accompanies the 16 September revision recorded above. See the current reading index for the published sequence and downloads.

18 August 2026 — Preface and Prayer

  • Added complete provisional translations of Kierkegaard’s Preface and Prayer, checked against the official SKS text and K9 commentary.
  • Introduced stable Preface 1–3 and Prayer 1 references.
  • Displayed the Prayer with four restrained breathing spaces while preserving it as one Kierkegaard paragraph and one reference unit.
  • Added lower-case Roman front-matter pagination to the complete PDF without changing the established Arabic page references for the discourses.

18 August 2026 — First Series web edition

  • Published eight readable First Series discourses. The initial release’s claim to include the full ending of V was mistaken; its omitted conclusion was restored on 15 September 2026, as recorded above.
  • Introduced stable discourse-and-passage references.
  • Added consistent previous, contents and next navigation.
  • Recorded the source and editorial status of each discourse.
  • Removed internal batch labels from public-facing reference systems.
