This edition is offered freely in the hope that Works of Love may find readers in homes, book groups, churches, classrooms and other non-commercial settings.

It does not replace Kierkegaard’s Danish text or published human scholarship. It is a provisional aid to reading, offered with its sources and limitations visible and open to correction.

The licence

Except for material identified below, and only to the extent that copyright or related rights subsist, the English translation, introductions, translation notes and editorial presentation produced for this project are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International licence (CC BY-NC 4.0).

This licence permits both sharing and adaptation for non-commercial purposes. It cannot restrict material that is already in the public domain.

What book groups, churches and other readers may do

Edition name and status

The Patricia Maitland Edition is named in memory of my late mother, 1938–2024. The name identifies this particular project; it is not a claim over Kierkegaard’s work.

Published human scholarly translations are the gold standard and the editions to use for academic quotation and citation. This web translation should not be cited as a scholarly translation. It remains open to correction and specialist review, and readers adapting it should preserve that provisional status.
