“Before you read” is editorial guidance prepared for this edition, not part of Kierkegaard’s text. Paragraph-display settings change presentation only; the wording, order and numbered source-unit boundaries remain unchanged.

Reuse and attribution

This edition is offered freely in the hope that Works of Love may find readers in homes, book groups, churches, classrooms and other non-commercial settings.

It does not replace Kierkegaard’s Danish text or published human scholarship. It is a provisional aid to reading, offered with its sources and limitations visible and open to correction.

The licence

Except for material identified below, and only to the extent that copyright or related rights subsist, the English translation, introductions, translation notes and editorial presentation produced for this project are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International licence (CC BY-NC 4.0).

This licence permits both sharing and adaptation for non-commercial purposes. It cannot restrict material that is already in the public domain.

What book groups, churches and other readers may do

  • Download, print and share copies for non-commercial reading and discussion.
  • Prepare extracts, reading sheets, discussion questions, study notes or worship materials.
  • Adapt wording, layout or presentation to suit the needs of a particular non-commercial group.
  • Create large-print, audio or other accessible versions.
  • Share a non-commercial adaptation with others.

What users must do

  • Acknowledge the Patricia Maitland Edition and link to this website where practical.
  • Name and link to the CC BY-NC 4.0 licence.
  • State clearly if the material has been shortened, rearranged, rewritten or otherwise changed.
  • Do not imply that an adaptation has been checked or endorsed by this project.
  • Do not use the licensed edition material for a primarily commercial purpose.

How to reference this edition

When this website or translation is referenced as a project—rather than used in place of a published human scholarly translation—the reference should name the edition, Galashiels as the place of publication, and 2026 as the year.

For an unchanged copy or reference:
Søren Kierkegaard, Works of Love, Patricia Maitland Edition (Galashiels, 2026), worksoflovesk.org. Free provisional AI-assisted English translation, licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0.

For an adaptation:
Adapted from Søren Kierkegaard, Works of Love, Patricia Maitland Edition (Galashiels, 2026), worksoflovesk.org, under CC BY-NC 4.0. Adapted for [group or purpose]; changes made by [name or group].

A shorter acknowledgement on a handout may read: “From Søren Kierkegaard, Works of Love, Patricia Maitland Edition (Galashiels, 2026), worksoflovesk.org, CC BY-NC 4.0. Adapted; changes indicated.”

What the licence does not cover

Kierkegaard’s public-domain Danish text is not claimed by this project. Material separately credited to the Royal Danish Library, Wikimedia Commons or another source remains under its own stated rights and licence terms. See Sources and Editorial Status for further information.

Edition name and status

The Patricia Maitland Edition is named in memory of my late mother, 1938–2024. The name identifies this particular project; it is not a claim over Kierkegaard’s work.

Published human scholarly translations are the gold standard and the editions to use for academic quotation and citation. This web translation should not be cited as a scholarly translation. It remains open to correction and specialist review, and readers adapting it should preserve that provisional status.
